Maya, 25

We asked Maya a few quick things. Best spot in Bhubaneswar? "The lipstick counter at Symphony Mall. I try ten and buy one." Rain or sun? "Rain. My hair does not agree." Tea or coffee? She laughed and said, "You pay, I drink."

That is Maya. She is 25, from Ranchi in Jharkhand, and Hindi and English are her two languages. At 5'9" she stands above most of our girls, with a fuller, curvy figure, deep brown skin and thick silver hoops she wears almost every day. Her black wavy hair goes up in a loose low bun, and it never stays there for long.

Her photos show the cheeky side. In a share auto on a wet day she gave the camera a flat, bored look with her eyebrows up, as if to say "really, now?" At the mall counter, in a grey linen shirt and jeans, she is smiling so big her eyes almost close. Even at home washing plates, she looked up at her friend through the window grille like she had caught them spying.
