Naina, 23

Naina's phone is always playing old Assamese songs, very low, just loud enough for her. Bihu tunes in the morning, slow ones at night. If you ask what it is, she tells you softly and then hums the next line.

She is soft-spoken, 23, from Assam, and her talk in Hindi or English is always low and gentle. She stands 5'8", slim, with light golden brown skin and black hair so long it reaches her hips. She keeps it in one plait with a red thread tied at the end, and a red and gold bangle sits on her left arm.

Her face is the one thing her pictures never give away. What they do give you is Naina in a wet colony park under a big black umbrella, in a dark green kurta, the long plait hanging down her side.
