Tara, 22

"Have you been to Puri?" That is the first thing Tara asks. If you say yes, she wants to know which beach. If you say no, she looks at you like you have missed something big.

Puri is her place. She comes from Nellore in Andhra, she is 22, and she lives out that side now. Her photos are nearly all there. She stands on the grey sand after the monsoon with her slippers in one hand and the fishing boats behind her. She turns a shell in her fingers at a trinket stall. She sits on a mat on the beach in the evening with friends, a tiffin box and a packet of chips, giggling with her lips pressed together and her eyes screwed up.

Tara is easy-going. She rides the blue bus to Bhubaneswar with a flat, unbothered face and her long plait over her shoulder, and nothing much gets to her. She is slim and small, 5'0", with a gold nose ring and silver toe rings. She speaks Telugu, Hindi and English.
