Mahira, 22

Mahira is not the girl who fills a room with noise. She will not dance on a table or shout across a café. She is the one curled in the corner of the sofa with a shawl over her knees, a big magazine held up in front of her and a mug of tea going cold on the floor.

She is 22, from Nainital up in the hills, with a soft, slow way of speaking Hindi and English. She is small and slim, about 4'9", with dark brown hair past her shoulders and a long side fringe she keeps pushing away. In the lift of her building she took a mirror photo in a grey shirt and black jeans, a cloth bag across her body. In another one, a friend caught her in the parking with the helmet visor down and the scooter key in her hand, ready to ride off.
