Farri, 23

Picture Farri on her scooty, riding from Baramunda toward Khandagiri with her long curly hair pushed under a band that never quite holds it. The road is wet. A bus pulls in at the square. She does not hurry. Farri never hurries.

She is 23 and a Bhubaneswar girl from birth, so Odia is her first language, with Hindi and English when she needs them. She is slim, with deep brown skin and curls that go wide and frizzy the moment it rains. The hill near her home is her happy place. One photo shows her on the stone steps below the Udayagiri caves with a water bottle, smiling up at the cave mouths while a monkey sits on the wall. Another is a Sunday picnic on a mat, a paper plate on her knee and friends all around.

That is her mood. Easy and a bit lazy, happy to let the evening go slow. Put her in a trial room with an ikat kurta and she will check the fit for ages, head on one side.
