Priya, 23

Priya has one rule she always keeps: she never leaves before the cake is cut. Birthday, office party, a friend's small win, it does not matter. In one photo she sits in the middle of the table at a little cafe in Saheed Nagar, fairy lights on the wall, cake on a paper plate, laughing with her head thrown to one side.

Raipur is where she grew up, and she is 23 now. She is tall, 5'7", with a full figure and thick wavy hair that goes wide in the damp, so she ties it back with a cotton band. For a night out she puts on a black top that leaves one shoulder bare and a long printed skirt, then spends five minutes at the mall mirror checking the angle. For a normal day it is a cotton kurta and slippers.

At the bangle counter on Janpath she tried on glass bangles and smiled until her eyes were two thin lines. That is Priya when she is happy, and she is happy most of the time.
