Sana, 22

Ask Sana where she goes on a free morning and she will say the Old Town. She takes an auto to the lane by the Bindu Sagar tank, where the flower sellers sit with heaps of banana leaves and strings of jasmine and marigold. She buys one jasmine string, pins it in her plait, and that is her whole trip. She comes back happy.

You can see it in her photo from that lane. A mustard salwar suit, a printed dupatta, the jasmine in her fingers, and a big smile that shows her front teeth and closes her eyes a little. That smile is Sana. She is sweet in the easy way, not the put-on way.

She is 22 and Tamil, from Tamil Nadu. Her English and Hindi are good, but she slips into Tamil when she laughs. Her figure is soft and full, and she wears a tiny gold pin in her nose and some thin gold bangles. In another photo she wears a deep green saree edged in gold on a wet road near Sishu Vihar, her thick plait over one shoulder.
