Sabira, 28

The first five minutes with Sabira are quiet ones. She comes in, puts her jute bag down, takes off her steel watch and sets it on the table. Then she looks at you with those calm, heavy-lidded eyes and waits. She is not shy. She just likes to see who you are before she talks.

By minute six you get the dry smile. It is small and it creases the corners of her eyes, the same one she gave the camera from her office window in Bapuji Nagar, grey shirt, sleeves rolled, a cup of chai forgotten on the sill. She is 28, from Chandigarh, and she has lived in Bhubaneswar long enough to know which tea shop in Satya Nagar makes the best toast. She speaks Hindi and easy English.

Sabira dresses simple and well. A black cotton kurta over grey trousers and small gold hoops. Nothing loud. That is why men like her for a dinner date first. She listens more than she talks, and when something surprises her, her eyebrows go right up.
