Monika, 22

In one picture Monika wears an orange cotton salwar suit with a printed dupatta. She picked orange that day because she was going to the flower stalls near Pallaspalli and wanted to match the marigolds. It worked. She stands under strings of marigold and jasmine with a small garland in her hands, eyes down, not smiling, just busy with the flowers.

Monika is gentle in a quiet, homely way. She is 22, from Chaibasa in Jharkhand, and she speaks Hindi, Urdu and English. Small, about 4'9", she has a fuller figure, deep warm brown skin and thick wavy black hair down her back. Her nose has a tiny gold stud, and she wears a black beaded thread at her neck.

Her other photos are just as simple. A selfie under the big trees on Ekamra Marg in a light yellow kurti, with a small smile that hardly opens her lips. A glass of tea on a wet bench outside a tea shop, her eyebrows up at something passing on the road.
