Pari, 24

First you see the hair. It is black and heavy, down past her shoulders, with three copper streaks at the front that she pushes back with one hand. Pari did them herself. She will tell you it was a mistake. Then she will tell you she loves them.

She is 24, from Kolkata, and at 5'7" she is one of our tall girls. Her eyes look half asleep most of the time, and she uses that. In a cab on a wet night, from the back seat, she gives the phone a long, bored stare. On the terrace she set a timer, ran into place, and still got there out of breath and smiling. At a juice counter in Nayapalli you finally get a proper smile, head on one side.

She wears black tops with jeans and white trainers, or a green satin shirt when she feels like dressing up. Her Bengali, Hindi and English all come with a dry little joke on the side. Don't try to win an argument with her. You won't.
