At Durga Puja last year Astha walked round the pandals for hours with a friend, and not one photo of her face came out of it. Every time the phone came up, the prasad box shot up to cover her. She thinks this is very funny. Her friend does not.

That little game is in all her photos. In the mirror of the lift in her building, the phone covers her whole face, and you see only her long dark hair, an olive shirt over a black top and her jeans. In a market lane she hides behind a big bunch of green leaves. In a selfie outside a tea shop in Damana she let the picture stop at her chin, so all you get is dark lipstick, a white shirt and the thin line of a gold chain.

Astha is 26, a Mizo woman from Mizoram. Mizo is her home language, and she gets by well in Hindi and English too. She is slim, with small silver hoops in her ears, and Barabati is her side of town.
