Meesha, 22

Meesha's hair has one bad habit. It keeps sliding over one eye, and she keeps pushing it back. She says it has done this all her life, and she has stopped fighting it. Most people tell her it looks nice, which only annoys her a little more.

She is 22, from Bhopal, and she grew up with Hindi and Urdu, with good English too. She is tall at 5'8" and slim, with straight black hair down to her waist and a small dark mole high on her right cheek. There is something elegant in the way she stands, even on a wet street in a plain black kurta and flat sandals with a coconut cart behind her. Her face in that photo is serious and still.

Then she goes shopping and the serious face goes away. At a cloth stall in the Unit-1 market she held up a folded printed cotton and flashed a half smile at the camera, one side of her mouth pulled up, head tipped back. She knows what she likes and she does not need long to choose.
