Neha, 24

Neha grew up in Kolkata, in a busy lane where everyone knew her name. When she moved to Cuttack, she came with one steel trunk and a jute bag. The trunk still sits at the foot of her bed, and the jute bag goes everywhere with her.

She is 24 now and the old town suits her. After rain she walks the narrow shopping lanes in a green cotton saree with a red border, her thick hair pushed back with a wide band. She stops at the silver filigree shops and turns the small pieces in her fingers with a quiet smile to herself. Then she sits down for a plate of dahibara aloodum and forgets the camera is there.

Her friends say she is the one who looks after everybody. She folds the clothes, she checks that you ate, and she still wears the shell bangle from home, the red and white kind. Her selfie on the bed shows the other side of her: a wide, happy smile and her head tilted. Bengali, Hindi, English, she is happy in any of them.
