Zamira, 23

Sunday is Zamira's slow day. She sleeps late in her rented room off Bidyut Marg, and around noon her friends call. They take a mat, a steel tiffin and a big packet of chips to the grass near Raj Bhawan Chak and sit under the wet trees till the light goes. Somebody tells a story, and Zamira laughs with her mouth closed and her eyes folded at the sides. Somebody always loses a slipper.

On the way back she stops at the scooter showroom at Jaydev Vihar and looks at the same scooter through the glass. She has not bought it yet. She will.

That is her kind of confident. Calm, and in no rush. She is 23, from Jaipur, with thick wavy black hair past her waist, a gold nose stud, and thin gold bangles that chime every time her hands move. Her languages are Hindi and English. Walk with her on Bidyut Marg, black kurta and white trousers, and she looks straight at the world with a flat, level face. Men like her for dinner first.
